Day 3

Today is day 3 in the ICU. So far we haven't had good days or bad days, we've had good hours and bad hours. I'll give some medical rundown for those who are interested. She wasn't putting out much fluid as they would've liked after the first night so they started her on IV lasix (diuretic) and it was increased today at noon. She has not been able to keep down liquids or solids since surgery until this afternoon (yay, fingers crossed!). We stopped the IV toradol last night to see if that would help since mom and I thought it was messing with her stomach to be getting so much IV, she also had her last dose of antibiotics earlier today. They do a daily chest X-ray- usually at about 4am 😱- and the doctors reviewed it during their rounds and decided based on that and her output from the chest tubes that they were not quite ready to remove them yet. This was a bummer as we were hoping to do that this morning and she could start to feel much better, this is likely the culprit of much of the nausea and they are painful.

The post op dressing was removed by the nurses and the amazing PA Katie first thing this morning. This was the first time she really has complained that something "really really hurt" and pointed to her chest tube sites. Her incision looks great! She got some Benadryl through her IV and zonked out for a while almost immediately. Then it was time to get up, which will only help move everything along. She did awesome. She walked two laps through the PICU with the physical therapist. Everyone here calls her the best patient.

After her walk was break time and she painted a beautiful rainbow on a canvas which will be hung in the childrens hospital for a couple of weeks and then they will mail it to us. She enjoyed this activity today and it was great to see.

She ate lunch after her painting and did really well. She did a scavenger hunt of Mr Potato head parts around the unit with the Occupational therapist after lunch. She put him together when she got back and since she's been up in the chair for a few hours it's time to lay down and rest! She is a rockstar and I couldn't be more proud. She is very serious and straight faced with simple answers right now and it's so unlike her that it's cute :) but who am I kidding, she's always the cutest.

Yesterday she asked me to lay with her now that she was free from many tubes/wires, which I happily obliged
